Volunteer FAQs

FAQs

How old do I have to be to volunteer?
All volunteers must be at least 12 to volunteer with a parent on site and 14 years of age or older to be dropped off.
I don’t have any horse experience can I help?
Yes! We are more than willing to train you! Most of our volunteers have learned most, if not all, they know on the job.
I don’t have experience with children. Can I still help?
Of course! All you need is patience and kindness and our staff will teach you all you need to know.
What do I do as a volunteer?
Everything! Volunteers tack, groom, feed, lead lessons, sidewalk lessons, tidy up around the barn, sweep, organize and anything else that needs to be done! Around Scooters we believe that no volunteers is above barn chores!
What are the physical requirements of a volunteer?
Generally volunteers need to be able to lift 50 lbs, walk for an hour, jog for several minutes, lift 20 lbs over your head and and rest your arm above shoulder for a lesson in order to steady a rider. We will do our best to work with your physical restraints.
What does my first few times volunteering look like?
Working with horses and special needs kids requires some training. During your first few weeks it might seem like there are a lot of volunteers or that your aren’t needed but don’t fret! You will soon learn the skills needed to be used in lessons!
I can’t volunteer more than once a month. Can I still help?
Because volunteers work with horses and special needs children it requires training. We require a once a week commitment or twice a month on special cases. Please contact us if you would like to help as a part of a work party or help fundraise please contact the volunteer coordinator.
What is the recommended shoes?
We require you to wear boots to work with the horses. Hiking, riding, and boots of the like are recommended for their durability and for their foot support.
What is the recommended attire?
We recommend that you dress in layers. Please refrain from wearing large jewelry, ripped jeans and any restrictive clothing. Jeans are preferred and shorts are discouraged. Please do not wear anything that will prohibit your vision.
Can I smoke on premise?
Smoking is prohibited of Scooter’s Place property. It is harmful to our students, volunteers and horses.
Do you accept court ordered community service hours?
Due to the fact that we work with young children and teens we cannot accept volunteers fulfilling obligations of court ordered community service.
